Surcharges end 1 October. Your card fees don't.

From 1 October 2026 you can't add a card surcharge in Australia. The fee your bank charges you is still there. We read your merchant statements, find what you're really paying, and show you how to cut it or price it in.

What are you really paying to take cards?

Grab your last merchant statement. Enter two numbers and see your effective rate, the surcharge income you're about to lose, and how much a menu price would need to move.

Total value of card payments, from the top of your statement.
Add everything: transaction fees, terminal rental, monthly and scheme fees.
Put 0 if you don't surcharge.
An illustrative target to compare against, not a quote. Published small-merchant plans vary by provider, card mix and whether you take payments in person or online.

Questions merchants ask

Does the ban cover Amex and PayPal too?

The RBA's ban covers eftpos, Mastercard and Visa. American Express, UnionPay and PayPal have said they'll also remove surcharging from 1 October 2026. Buy now, pay later services sit outside the RBA's designation, so check each provider's terms.

Can I offer a discount for cash instead?

Banks have said discounts for a particular payment method are allowed, as long as customers see the full price first. Check the ACCC's price display guidance before you change signage, and get advice if you're unsure.

Will my fees go down anyway?

The RBA is lowering interchange caps from 1 October, and statements will show a clearer fee breakdown. Whether that reaches you depends on your plan. Blended flat-rate plans may not pass savings through, which is exactly what an audit checks.

Do you need access to my bank or terminal?

No. We only need PDF statements with account numbers blanked out. We never ask for card numbers, logins or passwords, and we never touch your money.

Are you paid by payment providers?

Our fee comes from you. If we ever receive a referral payment from a provider, we tell you the provider and amount in writing before you decide, and you're free to ignore any recommendation.

Is this financial advice?

No. We analyse costs from your own statements and compare them with publicly available pricing. We don't recommend or arrange financial products. Decisions about providers, contracts and pricing are yours.
